The local market is witnessing an increase in the demand for basic foodstuffs, by citizens, in anticipation of the arrival of the coronavirus, which is sweeping the world and throughout the Middle East, in light of fears among people that the virus will reach Yemen where it is free of it so far, according to WHO data .

Citizens in the capital, Sanaa, complained of exploiting merchants and retailers, raising food prices, storing goods and not offering them for sale, with the aim of raising their prices, taking advantage of people's concerns about the health crisis in the world.

Citizens told Newsyemen that some shops and retailers have hidden some goods, taking advantage of the crisis the world is going through, due to the coronavirus, in the absence of the competent authorities and the Consumer Protection Association.

Economists assured "Newsyemen" that the panic and rush of people to buy basic food commodities is wrong, through which traders take advantage of the increased demand and store the goods, which leads to a sharp rise in prices.

They cautioned against manipulating prices and raising the value of goods and services to unjust levels, especially during times of crisis, which is reflected harshly on families who cannot access goods and services, as a result of the deteriorating economic situation, due to the war in the country that is entering its sixth year.

According to the Food and Agriculture Security Group in Yemen, the retail prices of foodstuffs have increased significantly in the past months, due to the measures taken by the Houthi militia coup militia to ban the circulation of new banknotes and this has exacerbated the devaluation of the riyal.
