The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has expressed its concern for livestock in Yemen, due to the suspension of its livestock vaccination program, which it said urgently needs $ 3 million to restart it.

In its latest update, the United Nations organization stated that the closure of the livestock vaccination program in Yemen, due to lack of funding, has led to an increase in animal diseases and deaths.

It added that more than 215,000 rural families are facing a crisis and food insecurity in emergency situations, and are now without part or all of their main source of income.

According to the FAO, livestock provides the main income for more than 3 million and 200 thousand pastoralists throughout Yemen.

The FAO said families raise sheep, goats and cattle, and depend on the consumption and sale of their products to survive.

The United Nations believes that the ability to sell an animal to raise money quickly when faced with an emergency or shock is the main backup survival strategy for many rural Yemenis.
