Aden, NewsYemen:

On Monday, the United States called for redoubling efforts to restore the legitimate government to Aden (southern Yemen) and to take steps to improve economic conditions.

"There can be no lasting solution to the conflict in Yemen or addressing food insecurity if the underlying economic grievances that have driven the conflict from its inception are not addressed," said the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, during the UN Security Council session.

"The United States therefore urges Saudi Arabia, the Yemeni government, and the Houthis to take steps to ensure the import of fuel, and we once again urge all parties to the Riyadh Agreement to redouble efforts aimed at returning the Yemeni government to Aden and to take steps to improve economic conditions," she added.

She continued, "Only a lasting peace agreement between the Yemeni parties can begin to reverse the dire humanitarian situation facing the Yemenis."

She stressed that there is a rare consensus in the Security Council and the international community on the conflict in Yemen that should be invested in order to stop the war.

The American delegate said that everyone agreed that the fighting must end, and the need to pursue the political path towards peace with the meaningful participation of women, minority leaders and civil society.
