Aden, NewsYemen:

UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, has announced that he is following with great concern the ongoing military campaign in Al-Jawf and Marib, and the heavy losses incurred by civilians as a result of that campaign, and its negative impact on peace opportunities and prospects.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, Griffiths said, "As the world struggles to fight the pandemic that has spread throughout it, the focus of the two parties to the conflict in Yemen must shift away from fighting each other, and focus instead on ensuring that the civilian population does not face greater risks  . "

The Special Envoy's statement noted that "since this latest military escalation began in January, the Special Envoy has repeatedly and repeatedly called on the parties to exercise restraint in public and in private meetings. It has also involved parties in discussions about adopting a publicly accountable mechanism to reduce escalation at the level of  The country and taking concrete economic and humanitarian measures to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and build confidence between the parties.

The special envoy reiterated his call on the parties to work with his office to achieve this common goal, and to act urgently to reverse this dangerous path.

"The continuation of the war is the decision of the parties to the conflict. Peace cannot be achieved unless the parties take a responsible decision to give priority to the interests of the Yemenis and stop the fighting," Griffiths said.

Since the beginning of this year, the Houthi militia began a major military escalation, in which it managed to drop the Naham hypothesis east of Sana'a and most of Al-Jawf Governorate, in a military campaign that is still ongoing to control the Marib Governorate.
