Academics with a fifth primary certificate... a Houthi academy to deepen sectarian fanaticism

The House of Representatives in Sanaa, which is under the control of the Houthi coup militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen - approved a bill to establish what was called a higher academy for the Holy Qur’an and its sciences. Representatives in Sanaa considered it a systematic destruction of higher education and a blatant attack on educational standards and conditions.

As announced by the contents of the draft law, it was stated in Article (3) that the draft law establishing the academy aims to “consolidate the faith identity of the nation through the teaching of the Holy Qur’an, and the embodiment of the Qur’anic project in society.” These are Houthi terms and slogans with sectarian, sectarian and regional dimensions aimed at dividing society Yemeni.

As stated in the establishment’s objectives: “Preparing graduates at postgraduate levels in the field of the Holy Qur’an and its sciences to undertake building generations aware of the Qur’anic culture, enriching the scientific elites and society with the basic components of a comprehensive and scientific awareness renaissance in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Qur’an, and qualifying and developing the capabilities and knowledge of preachers, imams of mosques, guides and preachers in  The field of the Noble Qur’an and its sciences for calling to God and spreading Qur’anic culture.

Assassination of academic standards

Representative Ahmed Saif Hashid stressed that the Quran Academy draft law was not based on the Yemeni constitution and legislation, "but rather based it on the non-national national vision.. God have mercy on Yemen and the constitution of Yemen."

Commenting on the contents of the draft law, Representative Hashid said on Twitter: "Ignorance dominates our lives and destroys what remains of the edifices of science in Sana'a," noting that the Houthi militia is assassinating "the academic standards and conditions, just as they assassinated citizenship and the standards and conditions of public office."

...and deepening sectarian fanaticism

Political sources in Sanaa revealed to (Newsmen) the requirement of parliamentarians to add an article to the draft law that criminalizes “inclusion in the academy’s curricula, programs or plans that perpetuates and deepens sectarian fanaticism in any way. 

The project of the Houthi Academy provided for the inclusion of 8 Houthi leaders in the presidency and membership of the Supreme Council of the Academy, which - according to the project - will "draw the general policy for the necessary scientific and applied literature in the field of the Holy Qur'an and its sciences and Islamic studies", approve study and training programs at the Academy and its curricula, and appoint faculty members  Approval of the request to assign professors from Yemeni universities to teach at the academy, and approval of the general results of the tests.

Representative Ahmed Saif Hashid mentioned from the articles of the Houthi Academy bill that among the components of the academic staff in the academy should be the able scholars and preachers whom the Supreme Council decides to contract with, which means - according to Representative Hashid - “academics, even if they are without a fifth grade certificate.  A capable Friday sermon even if he is without a certificate.  He said, "The committee removed the condition of high school from the text of the draft law...meaning an academy without a high school diploma."

Representative Hashid added, "They took down the University of Faith, and replaced it with a Quran academy. They left behind its door, the sermon, the Friday sermon, and the Friday sermons, religious groups with the same curriculum and contents, even if their dresses and masks differed."
