Aden, NewsYemen:

The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, stressed the need to stop the Houthi militia attacks on Marib, in the east of the country, on Tuesday.

In a press statement in Cairo prior to his departure, Griffiths said that in his meetings with Egyptian and Yemeni officials, he stressed the urgent need for the two parties to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and confidence-building measures.

He warned of the humanitarian consequences and the threat that the attacks pose to the chances of resuming the political process in Yemen.

He continued, "The two parties must place the needs of the Yemeni people on top of the agenda, stop fighting and engage seriously with the efforts of the United Nations."

The UN envoy affirmed his continued good offices, with the support of relevant stakeholders regionally and internationally, to stop the military hostilities, alleviate the burden of suffering, and reach a peaceful and sustainable settlement to end the conflict in Yemen.
